Tyson Fury explains to Gareth A Davies: “I’ve got something up my sleeve. Like Max Schmeling saw something with Joe Louis and he didn’t tell anybody the plan.”
The German Schmeling did indeed end the great American heavyweight Louis’s unbeaten record in that fight in 1936, at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. Schmeling had openly stated, in the days before the fight, that he had found what he believed was the key to victory, and employed it – inspired – to brilliant effect on the night. Schmeling used his jab in the opening three rounds, punctuated by a right cross from behind the jab. Louis was dropped in the fourth round by a right hand, and went on to stop his befuddled, busted opponent in the twelfth period.
“I see something with Deontay Wilder. And I’m not going to tell anybody until I reveal it on the night. There’s a chink in that armour. I’m going to take Deontay Wilder’s heart away in this fight. It’s going to be a more humiliating performance than it was against Wladimir Klitschko.”
